New Bern: Third NIght

Yesterday was a day of relaxation, some laundry, lots of computer time and visiting with friends in the campground.  Last night there was a meeting for the ham volunteers for the bicycle event, and afterwards five of us went to Paula's Pizza for dinner where Dad and I shared a Paula's Special that was delicious!

This morning started with a 7 A.M. meeting near the start line for Bike MS.  We were assigned to the 30 mile route which didn't start until 8:30 A.M. so we took the time to enjoy a breakfast biscuit at McDonald's and fill a cooler with ice and drinks.  The event went pretty smoothly until about 3 P.M. when the black clouds starting rolling in.  Torrential downpours, high winds and lightning convinced the organization to close the route and start the process of getting several hundred riders still out on the course back to the finish by vehicles.  Many cyclists kept riding anyway, battling the high winds, heavy rain and flooded streets, so the SAG wagons (including us) kept watch while carrying others back to the finish.  Luckily, no incidents occurred in spite of the weather and we were finished around 5 P.M.  There were still lots of activities going on, including a dinner, free beer, live music and an evening program.  We opted to head back to the campground as we were ready for some quiet time before resting up for another long day on the course tomorrow,  Looks like we may have more storms overnight with cooler and dryer weather for Sunday.
